Now, isn't that clever? Well, maybe not. Sometimes we think something is clever only because we didn't think of it ourselves.

It could be a LOT of people had already thought about it, but decided it was a bad idea and moved on. There might have been a few people who actually went with the idea and then to avoid any further embarrassment just didn't bother to tell anyone about it after they realized they had made an error in judgment.
